Comment: My home network consists of 4 desktops, a laptop, and a server. All of the computers depend on the server for printing, Internet access, and dvd-rip/music/file storage. The server's headless (no monitor attached)and down in the basement. It's quite a hassle to go downstairs to turn it on/off. Is there a way to turn it on and off via the PCs upstairs? Reply: (edit)Maybe. Does it support Wake-on-LAN (aka WOL). If so that is a easy way to start it up. Search google for more info. To shut it down, see this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317371 if that doesn't work, you could always log onto it with Remote Desktop (or VNC) and then shutdown that way. -Ryan Adams http://ryanadams.blogsite.org

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the information. Last night I got it to turn on using WOL. I'm still having trouble with shutdown. Whenever I try shutting it down from one of the computers upstairs, Windows will shut down, but the power won't. It displays the message "It's now safe to turn off the computer." Any way around that? I guess I could try Remote Desktop. Dual core, 2M cache, S939 Opteron 185 @ 3.2GHz 2GB PC3200 640M 8800GTS at 650/2000 500GB Seagate X-Fi Xtreme Music Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Reply: (edit)SOunds liek a BIOS setting problem. Try connectign a monitor and keyboard to the server temporarily and then check out the BIOS settigns for "APM", "auto power managment" or similar. -Ryan Adams http://ryanadams.blogsite.org

Reply: (edit)ACPI is enabled in the BIOS. There is an APM option, but the little description says that it should only be used for compatibiliy with older programs. So I left it to use ACPI power management. It will shut down properly if I use the Start-->Shutdown method. It only gives me that "safe to turn off PC" message when I try to turn it off via the LAN.
