Trying to use crossover cable

I am trying to connect two PC's (just to transfer files from one to the other). I have purchased a crossover cable, but can't figure out how to get the computers to see each other. One PC is the 2nd Windows98 and the other has XP. I would think this should be fairly simple, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated.
I am plugging the crossover cable into the jacks where I normally have the cable modem plugged in. I'm not sure if I need to change network settings in one or both computers. Please help.

Each computer must have a specific IP address in order for them to recognize each other. For example, I would suggest for simple file sharing using a setup like this:
Computer 1 IP - 192.168.1.1 Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Computer 2 IP - 192.168.1.2 Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Both computers should have file sharing enabled. If you need any other help, please feel free to e-mail me.
Hope this helps.

Additionally, I'd try setting
Computer 1 Default Gateway - 192.168.1.2
Computer 2 Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1
