I've got 3 PC's networked using a switch and had a wireless access point connected to the switch to enable laptops to access the network.

I have ISDN internet access (ADSL is coming soon!) and have been sharing the access using ICS.

The wireless AP has just died so I replaced it with a D-Link DSL-G604T Wireless ADSL Router. I was told I could use it as a wireless access point until I get ADSL.

I'm having trouble working out how it should be configured. Using ICS, the PC connected to the internet acts as a DHCP server for all machines connected to the network; but the same applies to the router.

Does the router replace the switch that I am using? Will the router pick up an IP address from the DHCP PC if I switch the DHCP server off on the router.

I'm confused, and not even sure I can do what I'd like to do.....

...any help, or advice, would therefore be appreciated.

Best Regards,

Andy

An update:

I have managed to resolve one of the problems myself - by disabling the DHCP server on the router, and pluging all the PC's network cables into it, it is serving the purpose of the switch and an access point. ICS is working across all machines and they also appear to be able to comunicate and share resources with each other as well.

I do have one further problem; the router is configured using a web GUI by accessing it's IP address.

I configured the wireless network, (changed the SSID and tried to apply the WEP settings) before turning off the DHCP server on the router. However despite the web pages showing the changes I have made, the router is still referring to itself by it's default name, and the WEP won't work.

I've also tried to restrict access by using an access list of MAC addresses, however that again does not work.

Obviously I am concerned by the lack of security on the wireless netrwork that this causes.

Until I find a resolution I can switch off the router when the network is not being used, however this is not ideal.

Has anyone come across this problem before with a D-Link router?

D-Link support here I come ;-)

Best Regards,

Andy
