Comment:

I have a home network consisting of two computers running Windows XP Pro SP2. They are connected by a crossover cable.

One (let's call it the primary computer) is connected to the Internet via a cable modem. That computer has dual boot.

When I boot the primary computer into one of the boot partitions, the secondary computer connects up to the Internet with no problems. When I boot the primary computer into the other boot partition, the secondary computer does not connect to the Internet--not via the browser and not via the email client.

Despite this, the Local Area Connection status on the secondary computer shows that there is continual activity, both sending and receiving.

Pinging from the primary to the secondary works fine, as follows:
Pinging 192.168.0.161 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.0.161: bytes=32 time=3ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.161: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.161: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.161: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Ping statistics for 192.168.0.161:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in mlli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 3ms, Average = 1ms

Pinging in the other direction gives similar results.

And setting the firewall on the primary computer to "allow all" makes no difference.

I presume that there is some setting that I must change, but what is it?

Dear ira
Appearantly that the "secondary comuter" as you calling it have a static ip and the default gateway is refer to one of your operating systems ip address so maybe thats why it does connects with one of the operating systems and it doesn't with the other one.
Please make sure of that and let me know the results.

I'm not certain that I followed exactly what serjy said, but what I do know is that the default gateway for the secondary computer is 192.168.0.1, and the IP for both operating systems is 192.168.0.1 .

Is that helpful?

Perhaps there is a file in one partition (the one that succeeds in connection to the Internet) that I can copy to the unsuccessful partition.

How about sysoc.pnf?

when u boot to your othe operating system tha you couldn't get to the internet troughit, go to your secondary computer and do the following:
go to start menu and click "Run"
type "cmd" and inside it type the following:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

and check your internet connection after you do it.

Are you using ICS to share the primary connection with your secondary pc? What OS's are you dual booting on the primary and which one works and which one not? An ipconfig/all would also help in how it's configured.

I tried that, but it did not help.

I am using Windows XP Pro on both computers and both partitions on the "primary computer."

I presume your question about ICS refers to the various partitions of the "primary computer."

Could you tell me how to determine that quickly? I have made various changes without writing them down.

Under Local Area Connection > Support, we may be on to something.

On the secondary computer we have:
Address type Assigned by DHCP
IP Address 192.168.0.161
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.0.1

On the primary computer (the partition that does not allow the other computer to reach the Internet) we have:
Address type Set manually
IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway (this is BLANK)

Is this the indication of where the problem is? What shall I do to correct it?

I fear I was too anxious in my last post. I have now checked Local Area Connection > Support for the successful partition, and it is identical to that of the unsuccessful partition. Except that I should have written "Manually configured" rather than "Set manually."

ICS is Internet Connection Sharing and one connection can be used to share with another pc but doesn't appy in this case.

You don't have a gateway configured. To remedy this, open network places and then view network connections. right click on your primary connection and select properties. Under local connection properties, scroll to tcp/ip and double-click it or highlight and select properties button. Under general tab, select obtain ip address automatically and obtain dns automatically. Reboot pc and cable modem. Your gateway should be assigned from your ISP's DHCP server on reboot.

But, as I posted later, I did not seem to have a gateway configured for the successful partition either.

Nevertheless, I will try your solution.

I tried exactly (I think) what Syslock suggested, and the immediate result, after rebooting both computers, was "Limited or no connectivity." Please note that I interpreted "right click on your primary connection" to refer to the connection between the computers. The Internet connection was already set for "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically."

I tried repairing the connectivity on both ends, but received error messages on each end that the IP address could not be renewed.

Then I went back and reversed the instructions, fortunately having written down the IP address and Subnet mask for my "primary computer." Then I was able to get back to the previous situation: connectivity between the two computers but no Internet on the "secondary computer."

I don't think we've reached a solution yet.

Did I do something wrong?

The right click was meant for your primary connection to the cable modem to automatically obtain it's ip info(which you verified in your last response). Run ipconfig/all from the command prompt and post results for both pc's.

Also take a look at ICS.

First, I apologize for not gettng this done sooner. I really hope you have the answer after looking this over.

I have run ipconfig /all for both partitions on my "primary" computer (the one conne3cted directly to the modem) and twice for the secondary computer, once for each partition booted into on the primary one:

My only comment is that one partition is in English and one in Hebrew, so that anything you may see as gibberish is the same as the corresponding line in the other partition, just in a different language.
