I am having great troubles directly connecting two WindowsXP computers.
I have XP on both of them, and I connected them together with a crossover cable.I am setting computer #1's IP to 192.168.1.2 with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and its DNS server as itself.
Computer #2 has an IP of 192.168.1.3 with the same subnet and the DNS is 192.168.1.2, the first computer.
So I set it up as such, and I can get the computers to ping eachother. However, I need to transfer data. So I set computer #1 to a workgroup, and it says 'welcome to workgroup 'x'. However, on computer #2, when I go to change the Network ID, it is greyed out and I cannot alter it. When setting up windows, I gave it workgroup 'x', so why can they not see eachother on the local network? They can ping, but for some reason they never find the other in the workgroup.
Thanks for any help.

first thing is to drop DNS address you don't need it to share files between computers that are hook peer to peer.
second is the Network ID is a wizard if i'm correct.. if i am.. i have never used it. there is another button below network id called "Changed" that brings up the computer name and workgroup options. Both computer need their own name, Make sure it's click on "workgroup" on both computer it has to be the same eg. "X".
Hope that works for ya
