Here is the deal.

I am using a actiontec modem for my qwest dsl and a lynksys wirless router for my laptop. I am having issues with the ip and opening ports for certain apllications to use these ports. I can access my modem and router by using 2 different ip's in my browser starting with 192.168.....ect. Now the problem is that no matter what i do or what i TRY to do i can never open the ports i need. I have been to portforward.com many times and have followed the steps but am still having trouble. When i try to find my ip from my internet browser it gives me some werid ip like 722.43.2.34?? i dont get what that is or what im doing.

To check your external IP address you have two choices. One is go into the router management interface and looking at the WAN (external) port TCP/IP information. The other is to go to http://whatsmyip.org/ from any PC in your LAN.

You may want to do both to ensure the IP shown in both cases is the same. Remember also, some providers have their systems setup to change your IP constantly. My provider doesn't do this and my IP remains the same as long as the MAC address of the device connected to the modem remains the same. My best friend back home's ISP changes his several times an hour....annoying to say the least when we're trying to connect to play multiplayer games that he's hosting.

Once you know your proper external IP as provided by your ISP, try connecting to it and see if your forwards work.
