We have an office network of 5 pc's connected to the internet through a router. I had to reformat the one that's attached to the printer, but now can't share the printer with the rest, and can't see the shared files on the the rest. Tried the network wizard, but the other computers are not visable in network places. The internet works so I figure I have it wired right. How can I add this reformated pc back on the network to share its printer? Thanks

Do you have the newly formated machine under the same workgroup name as the rest of the PCs in your network?

Windows defaults to MSHome workgroup name.

Run the network diagnostic on the newly formatted PC.

Click on

Start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system information/

Click on "tools" in the top of that box and choose "Net Diagnostic"

Run that and see what it tells you.

Make sure you've enabled "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" on network card's properties. If not, no file or printer sharing.

I did the net diagnostic and the one that failed was Network Adapter/IP address/failed/request timed out. But I have no idea what that means!

File and printer sharing is enabled on all the computers.

When I try the add network place and the add printer wizard on the other computers, I can see the new computer but it doesn't let me click on it to add it.

Thanks for all the help.

Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for you network card on the formatted PC. The formatted PC is not being assigned an IP address by the router. Go into "My network Places" and view network connections, and Right click local area connection and choose "properties". Make sure TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft windows installed, QoS packet scheduler, and file and printer sharing installed. If any of those are not installed. Install them and reboot the PC. You may also want to reboot the router.

Hope this helps.

The computer won't work on network without IP. Most probably there is no IP set/assigned on your computer. If you have firewall installed on this computer, make sure you've enabled file and printer sharing traffic to go through.

Thanks everyone..

I'm not sure if the correct driver is installed for the network card..I used the one from the dell driver disk I had. I remember seeing in a setting somewhere that there were 3 types listed, but can't remember where that was now..Will have to keep playing around with it.

Everything is installed in network places-properties. I checked the ip address and thats ok.

When I use the add netowrk place wizard it says "mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." Who would be the administrator?

Can you see the rest of the computers from the formatted one?

I had a problem whereby I could access comp1 from comp2 on the network but could not access comp2 from comp1 even though I could see it.

kept getting access denied message. Found the answer here only tonight.
Try it, it might solve your problem, it's at the bottom of the posts on the following link.
