Transferring Files via Linksys

Specs: Windows Vista
I have minimal tech knowledge so bear with me. I'm trying to transfer everything from my old computer (caveman XP) to my new computer (Vista-Windows 7) and nothing works. Bought first ethernet direct connection cables now connected to cable modem. Bought Easy Transfer Cable for Windows 7 that old computer recognizes but shows errors. Even tried without success. Both PC's appear but don't know how to configure home network to recognize, access, and allow me to transfer the data.

Connect the WAN port of the linksys to the cable modem & each PC to the LAN ports of the linksys. That way both PCs will get an IP on the same subnet, from the router.

Share the drives on both PCs. You may need to create a workgroup too.
