ok, i recently finished building myself a new computer and i wanted to transfer some files from my old computer over to my new one. just my mp3's, movies, photoshop projects, images, etc.
and so i figured the best way would be with a network crossover cable, and just share the files and copy them over to my new computer. well i got the network working alright, but whenever i would try and share a file, the computer would freeze.
so after struggling with that idea for an hour, i gave up and decided to put the old hard drive in as a slave in the new machine. and it didnt work at all, the new machine didnt even recognize the drive.
so im kinda running out of ideas here. i know i can buy a program and transfer the files over thru usb, but keep in mind, im trying to transfer about 45 gigs of data over to my new machine.
anybody have any ideas on what i should do?
here are the specs on the old machine and the new one...
old:
win 98 se
intel pIII 866mhz
512 sdram
master UDMA HD 30 gig
slave UDMA HD 20 gig
new:
win xp pro
intel P4 2.4c
512 DDR3200
master UDMA HD 160 gig
SATA HD 120 gig

Should have been able to network them with a crossover cable. Make sure they are in the same WorkGroup, as their defaults are different. You have to enable File and Printer sharing on the 98 inorder to share its drives, then actually Share it. Then you should be able to map the drive from the XP system and copy files.
The IDE drives should have both worked on the new machine as a slave drive on the IDE interface also. It may have been necessary to configure them in the System board BIOS so that they work.

How was you trying to connect your other hard drive it wasn't through a PCI ATA card was it?? If so you might have a problem, because most ATA cards can only handle one hard drive. Also, make sure that your jumpers are set correctly. Another option is that did you try to take out the other slave. Windows XP should recognize the older hard drive.

make sure u AUTO DETECT HDD in the BIOS when you install the older hdd to da new PCwithout the BIOS detecting it, it doesnt run mostly
so just AUTO DETECT the HDDs
