See also the help and support pages on both the vista and xp box. They should have a home networking walk through.

you plug in the "ethernet" cross over cable into the oversize phone jacks on each computer. On each computer you go in Control Panel - Network Connections and right click on your "Lan" icon. Then you choose properties and in the dialog box that pops up you "install" (1) client for microsoft networks (2) file and printer sharing and (3) internet protocol (TCP/IP).
You then select TCP/IP sand click Properties. In the window that pops up you
check the box that says "Use the following IP address" and for on computer you put in "192.168.0.1" and on the other computer you put in "192.168.0.2". you click OK.
You then right click on "My computer" and choose the "Computer name" tab. you click "Change" on the setting which says "to rename this computer or join a workgroup". You pick a name for the workgroup and make this the same on both computers. Also both computersx must be given a name.
The last thing to do is to share resources on your computers.

whoops I forgot.

In the window where you put in the "IP address" in the next line down you put in the "subnet mask" which is "255.255.255.0"
