I am trying to setup a network between my laptop and desktop PC. I have installed a crossover cable and followed directions I found online to configure. I set the tcpip address on one pc to 192.168.0.1 and on the other to 192.168.0.2. I set the default gateway and dns server to the same as the tcpip address on each PC. My first question is...each pc says it connected as per the LAN Icon in nertwork connections, but there is no
lan icon in the system tray....are both c's properly configured? Also how do i now go about transferring a file from one pc to the other? On the Laptop which has the files I want to transfer, I setup the shared folder by selecting the specific folder I want to share and then selecting the share option. I just have no idea how to transfer the files to the other PC now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you can see the files in the shared folder in Windows Explorer, just copy and paste as you would transferring files from one disk to another.

When I go to my computer, I see a folder called shared documents, however none of them contain any of my files. On the laptop, which contains the files which I would like to transfer I have placed the folder containing the files into the shared folder, but I can not see this folder on the desktop.

You dont have to place files in the shared folder. Thats just a convenience. You can share any folder by right clicking on it and selecting Properties > Sharing.

You should then be able to see the folder in Network Neighbourhood. Alternatively you can map a network drive to the desired folder by selecting Tools > Map Network Drive.

I ran the new connection wizard and selected the option for no internet connection. I do not want to share the internet connection, only to transfer files. I did see under the advanced connection an option to transfer files by communication port or paralled port but not the NIC. what settting should I be selecting to transfer files?

I tried to ping the ip addresses...When I ping the ip address of the laptop from the pc everything looks fine, but when I ping the pc fromthe laptop it states request timed out: packets sent:4 received:0. I would assume that this would be the problem, but I'm not sure how to fix....

make sure both computers have the same workgroup name

assuming they are both windows xp just right click on my computer and click on properties, then click on computer name...

1. both need to have same workgroup name
2. both computers need to have different computer names
3. disable firewall on both computers assuming they are windows xp, or make sure file and print sharing is enabled on both thru the firewall settings...

No need for all that. Just connect them together, assuming that you already have shared folders in both, use ipconfig in command prompt, then access each computer from the other by using the given ip address.
