Comment: I am trying to set up a wireless network at home.
I brought home my laptop from work: an IBM Thinkpad T40, running XP, with an Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter I just purchased a D-Link DI-524 router (802.11g). I installed the router per the instructions. All the proper led's are lit up. My desktop (connected by ethernet cable to my cable modem) connects to the internet without a problem. The laptop however does not seem to be finding the signal - "wireless connection unavailable" If I go to "View Available Wireless Networks" I see 4 listed: linksys, default, belkin54g. I expected to see D-Link somewhere, but I'm really not sure. Actually at this point I pretty clueless about what to do next. Can anyone help with the information I have provided?

Reply: (edit)I have a Linksys wireless g network that had a similar problem when I first installed it. Try this. Start - Control Panel - Network Connections - Network Bridge. Now uncheck all the boxes in the adapeter section and restart your computer. It worked for me and no problems since. Give it a try.

Reply: (edit)When you "View Available Wireless Networks" you see linksys, default, belkin54g. These are all default SSID id's. Go to your router and look at your SSID and see what it is. For example if your SSID is "default" then that is your wireless id. That is your wireless network. Please, please change you SSID to anything else besides the default name it came with. Change it to anything. Then disable SSID broadcasting in the router. This way your SSID will not be broadcasted to everyone else like you are seeing now. You have other wireless networks in your area so you need to set up security on your wireless connection, use WEP or WPA. You can download these docs from D-Link on how to set up. Once you have changed your SSID and saved it then go and look at "View Available Wireless Networks" again and then you should see the name you created. Also change the Login and password for your router. Everyone knows that the default login and password for a D-link is admin and no password. You will be a very easy target to be hacked.
