Toshiba laptop - failed to obtain IP address

December 16, 2009 at 10:29:25
Specs: Windows 7 Home 64-bit

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite A500
laptop for college, and it works like a dream...
except for the fact that when I go to plug an
ethernet cable into it, I get no internet. It
connects wirelessly just fine, but when I'm at
home, I get nothing from our modem. I ran the
installed ConfigFree program and it told me
that my laptop could not obtain the IP
address... a problem I have no idea how to fix
on my own.

Is there anyway to fix the issue?

go into the bios and make sure the network card is enabled.
look in device manager and make sure there is no yellow exclaimation mark next to the network interface

Two things on that;

1.) "The bios"? Meaning what, exactly?
2.) I looked under the device manager but didn't see anything
labeled "network interface." Do you mean "network adapters"?
