Hi,
Need help in making the ethernet port of my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite 1730) work. The port is onboard together with the modem port.
But the hiccup is that the device manager does not show any device called ethernet adapter. It only show dialup adapter. The recovery CD which comes from the manufacturer also does not show any reference an ethernet adapter driver ( only modem adapter).
I am asking whether the dialup adapter in the device manager of that machine can be used to configure the ethernet adapter (the interfaces are adjacent)
Thanx

are you sure that you have a NIC in the machine? If so, you must not have the drivers loaded/installed. Do you have any "unknown devices" listed in device manager?

I have an ehternet port for connection using rj45 connector. There are also no "unknown devices" listed in device manager.Only displays dialup adapter.Even the recovery CD from the manufacturer does not list ethernet adatper.
So what can the ethernet port for the rj45 connector adjacent to the dialup modem be there for?

Go to toshiba.com/productsupport. find your laptop and download the 225 page user guide. The back? view of the computer shows a modem port, but no built in network adapter. It could be that the external modem jack/rj45 jack are one piece, but from the manual it looks like there is no internal nic card. pcmcia network cards are cheap, I recently picked up an smc integrated 10/100 fast ethernet card for $19.99 with a $10 rebate at compusa. hth:)
