Subject: Tokenring or ethernet? Your advice please! |
Comment: Hi, At this moment we are running a NT domain over a tokenring 4/16 network. Within a few months we will be replacing all servers. There is a lot of Notes traffic, some client-server apps (Office 2000), file/print traffic, SAP printing and intranet traffic. Is it advisible to migrate to an ethernet network instead of keeping tokenring? What will be the advantages and disadvantages? Please give me your advice. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)If you have the boughet, please install Ethenet 1 GB or FDDI (but it more expansive). At minimum, install Fast Ethernet

Reply: (edit)100MB token ring is available from IBM... So by no means would I use terms like faster. I also didn't hear anyone comment on ethernet collision rates either.

Reply: (edit)(Sorry for my poor English) Depending the hardware you use to build your network (Switch, Cau, Lam & Mau) Token Ring 16 Mbits can be so fast as Ethernet 100 Mb. Depending what you will change, depending you will use Ethernet Switches or just Ethernet Hub, depending the money you have for the migration . . . . Personally I think that Switching Ethernet is "the" solution but, still never forget that Token/Ring is more efficient that Ethernet. HSTR (Token Ring 100Mb) is certainly faster than Fast Ethernet (also 100 mb) but the question is "Will it be possible to find Token Ring hardware in the future ?". Nice to read http://www.madge.com/documents/trnews4.pdf.
