I am setting up a new LAN for my company. Fractional T1 at 512k, 15 workstations, Win2k domain, 2 SQL Servers, a file Server, and a domain controller. Do I need to set up a Proxy Server or Firewall for security? I plan on getting a firewall when we set up an in-house web/ftp/email server but do I really need one until then?

yeah, if it is for a business then yes you'll need some type of security. Are you using SBS from MS? (small business server) is a sw package that has 2000 server, seq server, exchange, etc all in one integrated package. if you are then use the new version of proxy that comes with that, very effective.

We aren't using SBS, we purchased SQL and Win2k seperately... I think I may just buy a simple firewall and skip the proxy. I'm currently looking at netscreen, anyone have any suggestions? By the way, thanks to all of you...

how long has it been since you purchased? reason being is you may be able to upgrade to that package for very little (if any money) because when you buy them separate they are more expensive then the entire package containing everyhting.

With all due respects, I can't believe that your profficient enough to setup all those servers, yet still don't recognize the importance of having a firewall for security (if it's connected to the Internet). Even if your not sharing anything or running services, it's a good idea.

Be aware that there can be problems running an FTP server behind a firewall or proxy due to NAT. Read up on documentation relating to FTP and NAT and passive mode FTP. As to what firewall to use, I only know of Cisco, Zyxel, and Nortel as high end solutions. It comes down to how much money you want to spend to be secure, and usually the higher end solutions require more technical overhead.
-good luck

As analyst said, i also recommend to use a real corporate firewall instead of MS products. CiscoPIX, Sonicwall, Netscreen, Fw1 are prooven solutions.

If you are not a network administrator or security expert, ask an expert to do it for you. This is the best investment you will do.
