Subject: throughput FAST, file transfer SLOW
OS: WinXP Pro
CPU/Ram: p3 866 - 512mb
Comment:

I have a WinXP Pro box and a Win98 (soon to be redhat 7.3) box with a SpeedTouch Home-Pro being used for it's router and firewall then connected to a Linksys 10/100 switch to 2 Realtek RTL8139 10/100 NICs. I've read a million posts with people having the same problem with slow file transfers between xp and 98, but i only get like 25% network utilization one way and 13% the other.

- first question being: when i switch the win98 box to redhat will it affect these speeds?

- but on a more immediate question: i ran some tests with Qcheck (www.netiq.com) because someone pointed out the program on a recent thread and on the throughput test i'm getting like 48mbps - 50mbps ....so i don't understand why i'm getting such slow transfers...an 800mb file shouldn't take 10 minutes on a 100mbps network, but even the pings in Qcheck are all 1ms and in DOS XP-to-98 is 1ms and 98-to-XP is 10ms.

the router and OS both verify the connection as 100mbps, i've tried playing with the network cards' settings; auto, 100-full, 10-half, early tx threshold, etc. - didn't do anything but make it slower so i put it back to 100 full duplex. I also tried FTP transfer with a WinXP IIS server and CuteFtp Pro on the Win98 box...same speed.

- one more note...i've noticed that when the win98 box (it's an older computer 300mhz 64mb ram) tries to do anything, for example starting up Internet Explorer while files are transfering or even just if it has been sitting idle for a little while and you transfer files then network utilization drops to 1% and even goes as low as 0.4% ...so maybe it's the win98's cache? all the hard drives in all the machines are 7200 and ata/100 (though i'm not positive about the win98 the one in there might be ata/66), so maybe when i get redhat running it will improve being that linux is known for having such a signifigantly higher performance than windows...anyway, any thoughts?

are you confusing units? Mb = mega bit, MB = megabyte.

8 bits = 1 byte.

a connection of 10Mbps aprox 1MB/s
45Kbps about 4.5 Kbps
