HI everyone,

I just recently upgraded my wireless router from a Dlink DI-624 to a Linksys WRT54GX with SRX.
As I work at home, part of my usage requires that I connect to my Company's network via a VPN connection supplied by Nortel Networks. The software is called Contivity VPN Client.

Anyway, they give me various site locations in which to choose from for connection. With my old Dlink - I connected to any of the sites without question or issue. Now with this new router and considerably more expensive router, I can connect to most of them with the exception of one. It's a big deal only because it's the closest location to my home and is significantly faster for me.

I called Linksys support and what they finally told me was that I needed a Port Trigger? To be honest I could barely understand the tech support person and i'm kinda lost. I can ping the IP address of this location from a command prompt. I just can't connect when I select it from the software.

To sumarize, what is a port trigger, how do I set it up, and does Linksys' explanation sound plausabile?

Thanks,

Frank

Does this router have IPSEC pass through enabled? Many times you have to do this.

Check Security Tab - Firewall in your router's setup.

Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

A port trigger is something that listens for a connection on a certain port and then triggers an action.......like forwarding that port to an internal IP address. Since you're using client software to connect to a remote location I can't see how this could help you.

If it were me, I'd call their tech support back. If you have a hard time understanding the tech support person, don't be shy - you'rea paying customer - ask to be switched to someone else or ask for their second level support.

I had the exact same problem today, and your post gave me the clue that lead to a fix. You need to define a port trigger that fires on port 500 and forwards to port 500. In your WRT54GX router go to the Applications and Gaming tab, sub-tab Port Triggering. Enter any name (I use Nortel VPN), Triggered Range start and end port 500, Forwarded Range start and end port 500, and check the Enable box and click the Save Setting button. Also just double check that under the Security tab the IPSec radio button is enabled (should be the default). These 2 things made my Nortel Contivity VPN client work with my spiffy new WRT54GX-v2 router. FYI I got the port number 500 from this posting: http://text.dslreports.com/forum/remark,13711882~mode=flat (the port 4500 referenced there doesn't seem to matter). Also FYI, The router doc says a port trigger watches -outbound- port traffic and then remembers what machine sent it and returns the response to that machine, so even if DHCP gives you a different IP address each time this trigger will handle that. Hope this helps you. Cheers, Dave.
