Is it possable to connect to a remote linux server on telnet when you only have access to port 80? i am at college and this is the only port i have access to pretty much (ftp works as well :S) anyway i heard there might be ways of doing it. maybe a java applet that runs the telnet on the server and sends the output and input through port 80??

Not possible. Telnet is port 23 and port 23 is telnet. IE supports ftp over http which is why you can ftp through port 80.

Huh? FTP is port 21 and port 21 is FTP. IE supports the FTP protocol (sort of), it doesn't "support ftp over http". Try using netstat sometime.
But to answer the question, it is very possible. If you have administrative access to the computer you're trying to telnet to, you can configure the telnet server to run on port 80. Or you could use SSH (which the firewall probably allows) to redirect your traffic to the telnet server.
A quick search on Google returned some hits that look like you might be able to accomplish what you're trying to do using java also.
