I am curious about the ip lease time I have a Dlink router with a hardwired home PC and I somtimes connect my wireless laptop to the network
What is the best use of an ip address lease
is it better to leave it for 2 weeks or 1 hour?
Why?
I have "intermitent" trouble connecting to my network, and I think it may have something to do with this.

Lease time? Dynamic IP addresses are usually leased on a 24-hour basis by your ISP.

the lease time I am talking about is the time that my router software leases dynamic Ip addresses to my network computers
and I cant figure out what the best way to do this is.
for example if the lease is for an hour and I go over that time while using the network
does the router seemlessly issue another ip address or does it disconnect me
and if I have a long term 2 week lease time
and I dont use the laptop for a while do both my router and wireless laptop retain that ip address
the laptop is used in 2 different locations
on 2 different networks

somtimes it works fine and somtimes I cant connect, I see no discernable patern
Just looking for some Ideas or info
Thanks

The Ip addy is reassigned seemlessly. You wouldn't even realize it. If it's leased for an hour, and your on the PC for more than that time. You still retain the IP until you reboot the PC. Typical setting is for 24 hrs.
The problem you are having is prolly due to the fact that the laptop is used on two different networks. You may want to set up two hardware profiles for that nic card, with the settings for each network in the two different hardware profiles. Then you can switch between the profile for each network you are on.
Click on Start/Help and support to learn more about hardware profiles.

Thanks dave
I think I will have to look at the profile settings on the ibm laptop
There are 2 settings now
One problem I have is I need to buy a thumb drive
The Laptop is WinXp and has no floppy drive it has a cdr/w drive and the PC is win melenium when I go to network wizzard on either the setup-disk that they want to make for the client in either case is not compatable
so I have been meddling with the settings
Ill break down and get the thumbdrive then XP will make a setup disk for the PC which has usb also
