telephone line jack not receiving dial tone on laptop

Gateway laptop / Mt3705

Specs: Windows Vista
I can not get onto the internet via dial up. The message says that I have no dial tone. Using the same line, I get a dial tone on the phone. I can get onto the internet via a DSL connection, but it will not make a connection when I have a telehone line inserted in the phone line jack. This problem started after the power went off and on quickly two times. I have followed all the instructions that I have found to reset the modem, but to no avail. Is it possible that the phone line jack needs to be replaced. I have a gateway laptop with Vista program.

The phone-jack is probably ok as it's only a set of copper contacts. What's more likely is that the internal modem has been damaged. Repairing that involves fitting a new modem which must be identical to the broken one.

Do you have both voice and dsl service?

Does the jack at the wall have a dial tone on a phone?

Do you have a 4 wire phone cable instead of the normal 2 wire cheapo?

I understood that in order to be connected to the internet via DSL, the internal modem had to be operating properly. The DSL connection is working fine except when the telephone line cable is inserted in the phone line jack. I have both DSL and phone service, but I believe it is the normal 2 wire phone cable that is distributed by the telephone company when they set up the DSL to the current phone service.

"The DSL connection is working fine except when the telephone line cable is inserted in the phone line jack."

There needs to be a filter on the telephone line. What you describe sounds like the filter on that connection has been damaged.

contact your isp for a new telephone interface.
