Hi All,

I have been asked to produce an online form to allow people to request firewall changes. I have a paper document outlining the fields. One of the fields is TCP/UDP what sort of values would be put in this field? and can some explain what it is in this context?

Many Thanks

Those are ports. Users would need to know which port(s) were to be opened/closed in order to complete the information on that field.

For a layman's explanation, look here:

Port Types. TCP is a connection oriented port...ports that actually transmitt with some intelligence...i.e. if a server was transmitting information to your computer and for some reason there was a loss of information, TCP would identify the error and re-transmitt the missing data. Think of it as talking to someone over a cellphone, if they didn't hear part of what you said they could ask you to repeat what you said, and you would repeat what you said.

UDP is connectionless oriented ports. Send information without checking for errors. Like sending a letter. You wouldn't know if someone actually received it.

Why use UDP over TCP - speed...if you don't have to check for errors you can transmitt information faster. If however delivery of the information is important you use TCP.
