tcp/ip will not query

Specs: windows xp 2
My son did a complete recovery on my pc (Gateway, windows xp2) and we have not been able to connect to DSL since. Can't find tcp/ip in promt or in LAN. When I try to repair 1394 connection I get- "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because following action cannot be completed: Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed." I've tried everything and still nothing. I've probably messed some things up trying! I need help!

1394, also known as Firewire, is a competitor to USB; it is not your network connection.

What you need are Ethernet drivers.

Rightclick My Network Places and choose Properties.
Now you should get a list of available connections.
There should be listed a Lan Area Connection, if connected by wire, or Wireless Connection if connected wirelessly.
If this does not exist, rightclick My Computer on your Desktop and choose Manage.
Now click the Device Manager and look for unknown devices. If there is listed a unknown network card, you're missing the correct driver, as Razor2.3 stated.
Install the driver and it should (if connected by wire) work immediately.
