Dear all,
I have a small LAN existing of a Belkin54g router/gateway, a WIN2000prof-sp2 server and 1 labtop with XPprof-sp1 (connecting via wireless card).
The following works FINE:
- assignation of IP via the DHCP function of the router.
- internet access via both pcs
- ping from win2000sp2 pc to xpprof-sp1 labtopWhat DOES NOT WORK:
- pinging from xpprof-sp1 labtop to win2000sp2 pc .Offcourse this is nasty since i want to use my db hosted by the 2000Does somebody have an idea what can be the cause of this? Maybe I must check again the buglist for sp3 for 2000?
Thanks a lot in advance for your feedback!
Best regards,
Pascal

Sounds like a somesort of firewall issue. If you have internet access from both computers then DHCP and IP are working correctly. The only reasons these would work correctly and a ping test fails is if you have a firewall blocking the port for ICMP (protocol for ping). Does your router have a built in firewall? Can you ping the router?
- Good news is your situation isnt as nasty as it sounds. If you can access the internet chances are you can access your PCs, despite the inability to ping. Denying ping is a general firewall activity preventing hackers from screwing with your internet connection with the "Ping of Death" (a hacker attack sending ongoing pings so you your connection is clogged), and similar attacks. Can you see your PCs in network neighborhood?

Indeed, a while ago i in
stalled a soft firewall on my server pc. I forgot it was running ;-) and it was indeed blocking the ICMP replys.
Everything is allright now.
Thanks a lot for your reply!Pascal
