Greetings I have a question regarding tcp/ip addresses. When I do a ping for 192.12.1.100 on my local network I get responses but when I ping 0192.0012.0001.0100 I get not fund errors. Can anyone explain why the addresses do not equate to each other?

Becasue the software that is interpreting the input never expects more than three digits in each section as there can never be more than three digits in an IPv4 address. Four digits and it get confused. It might also be interpreting it as an IPv6 address but it is incomplete for an IPv6 address.
192.012.001.100 should work.

Just to add to what wanderer said. In reality, an octet is 8 binary bits (ergo the phrase "octet").
What you see when you see 192.12.1.100 is the dotted decimal representation of the actual binary number.
For more information, simply google "TCP/IP addressing" and do a little reading.

yes octect is 8 bits ip version 4 uses 4 octets range of one octect is 0 - 255 any more than that and it wont accept it version six uses six octets range is still only 0 - 255
your just confusing the arse out it by puting in the leading zeros. since it will never be able to use the leading zero
