My windows 98SE athlon 1800+ starts up
all by it's self. At 3AM it fires up.
I just set up ethernet on it, but
other than that I made no changes.

Check your BIOS (CMOS) settings to see if any timed events are set. Many computers have BIOS event timers now.

Hope it helps.

If you've got Juno on that thing, it may also be dialing out at 3am. Check Juno's "Supercomputer Project".

Try plugging out the network cable and see if the machine still boots up in the middle of the night. Even tough you have turned off the power the network card still lives..

Oh yeah... forgot to mention it before... see if any "wake up events" (besides the timer) are set in BIOS. They could be the wake on lan feature, ring-in on a modem, anything... do what Andreas mentioned with the network cable if you don't find anything listed. Unplug the modem as well.

Thanks for the ideas,
I don't have juno, the wake on LAN is off,
there are no timed events, I do have it shut down,
And I think there is a ghost in the machine.
I will try to remove the networking. I have the files
copied from my old machine, now I won't need the
ethernet right away.
Keep giving me ideas, and in the AM I'll check back.
I have the cable out, and it was on again this morning.

Well, I disabled the ethernet in the setup,
and the machine didn't come on last night.
Does everyone with an active ethernet have this action during off times?
