using "net view" im getting a system error 6118? what in the world is that? its a small 3 machine home network. any help would be very appreciated...

Did you try typing in NET HLPMSG 6118? it tells you that the computers on your workgroup can not be displayed at the time. either wait a while or do a ipconfig/release and then renew.
Forget Microsoft, Go with Linux.
