I have windows Me with a wireless wrt54g linksys router hooked up with my sons Xp with a pci wireless adapter. We have been doing great, he shares my folders and I share his, he shares my printer. After all these months now I have problems and think it is because I recently installed sygate as his firewall and I don't know how to fix it. He can do everything from his computer but when I click on network places from mine I hang until I hit ctrl, alt, delete. In network places use to be a folder that said dylans documents and now it says target. When he prints to my printer everything is fine, when I print from mine there is no black showing up. If I disable his sygate and windows firewall everything is fine. Black prints and in network places I have mshome then it shows our two computers. I am novice, took me a month to figure out how to network us. Thanks in advance.

Obviously you need to configure the 3rd party firewall to permit access from your computer. Usually the term "trusted zone" is used, but I don't know anything about Sygate.

I know that. On his sygate I have to allow my ip address or open a port. I get confused when I go to the command prompt and type ipconfig. There are two ethernet boxes with 3 sets of numbers. Using dsl and a router which ip number goes to his computer?

Not sure what you mean by the "two ethernet boxes with 3 sets of numbers." If necessary copy the output from ipconfig /all here.

Using a router your LAN address, the one that goes to the other computers on your intranet, is usually 192.168.n.x, where n is 0, 1 or 2. The router itself is usually 192.168.n.1, and that is the address for the Gateway and often the DNS server that you will see in your ipconfig.

I use sygate at home. under the Tools menu, choose options. Then under Network Neighborhood there is a check box that says "allow others to share my files and printers". check that and you should be able to share files.

Didn't know how to copy it here.
0 ethernet adapter
ip address 192.168.xxx
subnet mask 255.255.xxx
default gateway 192.168.xxx

1 ethernet adapter
ip 000
subnet ooo
default

2 ethernet adapter
ip address 172.xxx
subnet mask 255.xxx
default gateway 172.xxx

So when using sygate or any firewall, what ip am I suppose to allow?

Per my previous post, "Using a router your LAN address, the one that goes to the other computers on your intranet, is usually 192.168.n.x, where n is 0, 1 or 2."

So you would use "ip address 192.168.xxx"

You didn't tell us anything about another connection, but "ip address 172.xxx" is a public IP address, so I would not expect that to be the network with which you are connecting to the other computer.

So all these numbers mean nothing when it comes to the sygate firewall?
1 ethernet adapter
ip 000
subnet ooo
default

2 ethernet adapter
ip address 172.xxx
subnet mask 255.xxx
default gateway 172.xxx

So the ip address 192.168.xxx is the one that I have to make sure sygate allows? not the default gateway 192.168.xxx ?

You didn't tell us anything about another connection?
I have a router and dsl or do you mean my sons ip?

172.xxx.xxx.xxx is NOT a public address.

Whoops, you're right Stryker. Thanks. At least partially right. I think, now that I stopped relying on my memory, that 172.16.0.0 through 172.31.255.255 are private, but the remaining 172.xxx.xxx.xxx are public.

So, Lisa, the IP address that you want to permit access to your son's computer is either 192.168.xxx or 172.xxx, whichever is in the same subnet as your son's computer.

You guys are confusing me. I read pages on these numbers and get so confused. It's easier to hear it in easy terms. I want to learn about it because whether it is sygate or another I will have to configure it. I am using McAfee free version, only reason is I was able to configure it. (yes I am going to switch) I had to allow 192.168.xxx and I gave it a range of 4 digits in case it changed. So am I to assume the 192.168 is the number I have to allow on sygate?

"You guys are confusing me."

Sorry, Lisa. I should have quit after my Response Number 1 because I do not know Windows ME and I don't know what your network looks like.

From your first post I made the assumption that you had a DSL or Cable modem connected to the WAN (or Internet) port of a router, your PC connected via ethernet to a router LAN port, and your son's computer connected to the router wirelessly.

From the partial IP configuration information you gave in Response Number 5, it looks to me (and I am almost definitely not understanding something) that you have 3 ethernet adaptors in your computer--"0" is connected to a private subnet beginning 192.168; "1" is not connected; "2" is connected to a private or public subnet beginning 172.

I hope somebody else can see through this better than me and clear up the confusion.

That's okay. I wasn't mad I was laughing. When experienced people get confused I don't feel so bad. LOL
On my Me computer I do have DSL and the wireless router, on my sons Xp he has the wireless adapter. I don't think it is anyway things are connected because everything works like it is suppose to when I turn his sygate off. When sygate is on, he doesn't show in my network places, but I show in his. I don't think I'll ever get this figured out. Even if I switch to another firewall I still have to configure it.

So try the range of 192.168.n.0 thru 192.168.n.255, where your computer's "0" IP address is 192.168.n.xxx.

I tried putting in 192.168.xxx with a range of 5 upwards. I tried 192.168.xxx thru 192.168.255. They either disappear in advanced settings or change from allow to blocked. I don't know what to do anymore. I think I will uninstall sygate and go to the McAfee that I am using, it might not be the best but it is less complicated. Thanks for all your help.
