Hey everyone,
I was wondering what is the proper procedure in switching my ethernet connection from router to my cable modem.

In the past I had a problem receiving internet connection from switching directly from my router back to my modem without doing anything prior. My computer would just not receive any activity. Is there something that I must do before connecting directly to my cable modem?

Usually the router software will wipe out your current I.P. settings.

That may be the case but I am not asking going about going into the router. I am going back to my modem and when I do that it doesn't work.

Guess no one told you want a risk putting your pc directly on the internet without hardware or software firewall. Great way to pick up a port trojan. You get one just by being connected and unprotected on the internet.

Hopefully you have a software firewall installed. If so I would suspect this is your issue. Since you are connecting to a different ip subnet [router gives you one different from the one of the modem], you need to configure the software firewall to "trust" this local subnet and not block traffic from/to it.

Otherwise is may be your routers MAC address is registered whereas your pcs MAC is not registered with the ISP. You can note the routers wan mac address [in the wan interface of the router] and then alter your nics mac address by putting the routers mac in the "user administered" physical address of your nics properties.

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

I appreciate the input wanderer, but I am fully aware of everything that is out there in the internet. I am just doing this test out the speed of my internet prior to doing an upgrade. What program do you recommend for changing Mac Addresses? I was reading around and saw some utility called Macshift. However, I haven't fully dived into yet because I am not going to be around the setup until the weekend.
