Hi there,
I switched ISPs that were supposed to have similar
basic settings, with an Efficient NetWorks/Siemens
SpeedStream 5200+ ADSL MoDem available during this
transition. Our LinkSys BEFSR41 router controlled
the said MoDem (the router handles PPPoE protocol)
and a 2nd MoDem (GNet BB0060B) i bought some weeks
ago worked just like a plug-in replacement but not
anymore. The siemens ADSL MoDem is proprietary to
Sympatico, it's due for return to the ISP since it
was provided for free to our category of Sympatico
customer... In the meantime, i get an opportunity
to compare that ISP's setup with that of Vif (this
is the guys i picked as a reasonable alternative).Sympatico's ADSL MoDem is completely mute, there's
simply no user-interface as it has been eradicated
by flashing the unit with proprietary code just to
make certain the customers don't try to fix it!... It still works, nonetheless. And about fixing ADSL MoDems, my problem it that i
need to re-configure the GNet MoDem, i'd say. The
router no longer seems to support a PPPoE session.Luckily, the GNet returns a whealth of information
which i captured as .JPGs and then published here:http://public.sogetel.net/bicephale/Vif%20InterNet/index.html
Judging from all the little green lights, it's all
too clear the connexion is ready to be made but it
requires a tuneup to emulate the previous MoDem...I mean, there were some red ones too, as i recall!

you need to call your ADSL provoder and tell them you have a new modem. They probably need to set it up and download the config to it. You cannot do it - as you said - they don't want customers messing with stuff.
Rule #1 Good computers don't go down.
Rule #2 There is no such thing as a good computer.

I like the part about "messing" around... You
may be true writing that my ISP can reconfigure
my GNet MoDem/Router remotely. The unit will
now work as a plug-in replacement for the Bell
Sympatico leased custom MoDem when combined with the router. The MoDem alone is supposed to make the connection but it doesn't at the moment. My password had been wiped-out when i returned home this evening and tried to access the MoDem (the password was back to default)...Overall, this seems like an improvement! :)

Hi there,

RM> don't want customers messing with stuff. The ISP refuses to support the MoDem now that it's
here, actually... My request for a configuration
file will be ignored, i've been refered to GenTek
after the clerk argued about not having a license
for that, he mumbled! I found something to begin
with at this address below - thanks, anyway:http://ftp.gentek.com/gnet/ADSL%20Modems/BB0060/
About this ISP reconfiguring my GNet MoDem/Router
remotely, i'll say that after i spoke to 3-4 guys
over the phone (for about an hour!) it's now quite
clear to me those people are too afraid to take a
peek into it to believe they can do this, really. There's no explanation why the password had been
returned to its default value but i doubt the ISP
is involved in any way. All the technical stuff i
have got to mess with for my trouble was their MTU
and Multiplexer-Type values, after all!... %-b,Salutations,
