I'm planning to network my a pc and laptop with a cable modem but can't figure out which is better to use, a router or switch? Please advise.

Well, most likely you will find a 2-for-1 deal. For the ease of use, get yourself a cable/dsl router with a built-in 4 port switch. Common brands are Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, and Belcan.
Hope this Helps!

Switch is cheaper but does less stuff. Use it if you are going to use ICS (internet connection sharing). (Though you could just easisly not use a switch and use another NIC instead).
Router is more expensive but you get more stuff, like firewall capability or NAT (which is a method of your PCs sharing the internet without ICS).
Bottom line, depends on if you want more functionality, or less, and what amount of money you want to spend.

A switch as the gateway for your network ? If you want to spare yourself some agony, get a router :)

Not the switch as the gateway...usin ICS in Windows as the gateway, the switch would just be used to connect the other PCs together. Sheeessh, some people are already on holiday I see. Happy Thanksgiving :)
