A hub sends all packets coming in one port out all other ports. Switches are a bit smarter, and build a table of which MAC is where. When it receives a packet meant for a certain MAC, it only sends it out the correct port.

Manageable devices can collect statistics which can be viewed on an SNMP management station. In other words, they have a built in SNMP agent.

yep, Switches are "smart" hubs are "dumb". Switches are NOT faster than hubs, they can actually cause a bit of latency because they make decisions. Hubs can slow it down but if they're not overloaded and if they're working properly, it should be very minimal.

I hope we can agree that a device cannot make decisions. Therefore it cannot be slowed down for actions that it is not capible of doing. machines can only calculate based on what humans have trained them to use to calculate. Anyway switches are faster than hubs because there are no packet collision and excessive broadcasting is not needed since the switch learns the mac addresses for each machine and keeps track of which port they are on sending the data only to the node needed also its a switch and works in some ways just like any switch an example would be lets say you have 400K and a for port hub with four machines running all out thats 100K a peace or 400K for one or 200K for one and 150 for another and 25 for the other two what a messs huh? Now with a switch it is 400K for each of the four machines. Hows this you ask? Well its switches the connections think of it like a an ignition router cap for a four cylinder auto. Where as a hub is like one of those multi-plug outlets that let you get 3 plugins from one outlet but you still only have 125V and 30A to DIVIDE between the three objects. So in conclusion we learn that switches are good hubs are bad switches know where your machines are connected hubs have to ask each time they need to send a packet. Hubs divide switches unite.
