I am trying to manage my switch. I have a 3com superstack II. My problem is I cant find the IP of the switch. I have tried a few apps that scan ips in my subnet, but nothing has found the switch. I also have a SonicWall firewall, and a unique ip on my pc.(192.168.168.XX) Just looking for any advice for a virtual connection. Not Via the console port, due to the fact that it is all the was across the room and I dont have a cable. Thanks in advance!!!

I'm assuming that's a 24 port 3300.

You have a couple of options:

1) unplug every other device from the switch but your PC and run a port scan on your subnet. With luck, this will tell you the IP of the switch.

2) unplug everything from the switch and move it to your PC and console in (best idea) I believe it's just a regular COM cable (as compared to a null modem cable) you need to console in to that type of switch. It's been a while since I've worked on one.

3) search the web for a manual and find out how to reset it to defaults and reconfigure it

A suggestion - When you get it figured out, write the IP/Subnet Mask of the switch on a piece of masking tape, or label, and affix that onto the switch so you can't forget.

Are you sure that it has been configured with an IP?

Have you tried using nmap from http://insecure.org/nmap/ to do a ping sweep of your subnet?

Once you find the IP (or configure it via the console port), you should be able to connect to it via telnet or depending on the model, it may have a web interface.

Capturing packets off that unknown interface would also probably reveal it's IP. Check out Ethereal
