I recenetly bought a DLink router and have hook up my printer, DSL and three computers to the router.
My first question is, for me to use the printer do I have to install the printer on each of the computers. Do I have to install DSL S/W on each of the computers to use the internet.

How do I share/access files between different computers?

Yes."

But by using the Add Printer wizard on each machine. Not actually installing the software from a CD or Floppy. The wizard will grab the files from the host PC.
The host machine that the printer is attached to will need to be running in order to print from the other machines.

Turn on File and Printer sharing on the host machine and file sharing on the others. In order to see those shares from the other machines there has to be something in those shares to be shared. Meaning, if the shared folder is empty then the share will not be seen.

I *assumed* from his post, perhaps incorrectly, that the printer was attached to the router (I have a D-Link router w/a print server). In that case, I failed to mention that there is a software piece that must be installed on each computer to connect to the printer. Once that is installed, the printer is recognized as a local printer. The printer setup for each computer would be the same as if it was directly connected - i.e. follow the installation instructions that came with the printer.

As for a printer that is shared out from another computer, the only time I have seen where the files are "pushed" from the host machine is in a properly configured domain network - not a peer-to-peer network. When I have added such a printer using the Add Printer Wizard, I have always needed to supply the driver files during the install.

normally with a print server it has a ip address. You setup tcp/ip printing to print to that print servers provided printer. XP has the ability to do this natively during the printer setup.
