Subject: Sudden ADSL SPEED increase!!
OS: XP SP2
CPU/Ram: P4 2.4/512
Comment:
I have a 64kbps ADSL (do not surprise the usual speed here is around this 64-128), and the speed has been somehow terrible and sometimes less than a dial-up!

Anyway, some days before suddenly my download speed was increased in a way I thought I am dreaming: the maximum download was 50 kilobytes (400 kbps) that is 6 times faster than my maximum speed! however the speed decreased as before the day after.

1.ADSL Status (increased speed):
SNR Margin: 38.7 ---18.0---dB
Line Attenuation:41.6 ---20.0---dB
Data Rate: 512 ---512 ---kbps

2.ADSL Status (usual speed):
SNR Margin: 33.8 ---17.0---dB
Line Attenuation:43.8 ---18.5---dB
Data Rate: 512 ---512 ---kbps

3.ADSL Status (connecting line directly to modem, still usual speed):
SNR Margin: 41.7 ---19.0---dB
Line Attenuation:43.8 ---20.0---dB
Data Rate: 512 ---512 ---kbps

As you see the Status 1 and 3 are very close but the speed was high only in number 1 although at that time the phone line was still connected and it was working! And also having the number 2 status I don't experience much, actually no, difference in the speed.

Do you have any CRAZY idea why the speed was so high at the time? (I checked my service and it was still 64 so they have not changed my account)

Cant see any different. The Data rate is the same for all three, 512 kbs Where do you get the 64 kbs from. That's IDSN speed, not ADSL. The SNR Ratio and Line Attenuation changes but that can change with the weather.

SNR Ratio and Line Attenuation can effect the maximum speed but it is not something you can control. If they fluctuate wildly I would get your phone company to check the line. A lose connection or some weak insulation can effect these values.

no idea but 64k for adsl increadibly low aint it?
well i do have two ideas and thats the speed reported was wrong. i know if i have a download or something and ive started it before and cancled then restart it i get phenominal speeds reported at the begining. but thats due to the fact the programs relising that i already have part of it downloaded.

the other one is the isp may have had a glitch or installed ne hardwear and the speed wasnt limited for that time.

all text needs typos. There there for the reader to find,to distract them from the total lack of content.
google it! wasnt the answer to the question i asked so dont be dense and give me that repl

First, as I said the speed is usual for us, don't think about how terrible it is. And 512 is just shown there however the share dedicated to me by the ISP is 64. (64 for $10 that is the cheapest, you could have 128 for around $20!!!)

Second, the download speed was real, and I know what I am saying and it was this way for around a day.

Third, I too had guessed it may be the servers having some kind of update. But thought there might be any other technical issue.

So is there any IT or Electronic genius to analyse this?

You must be pretty far away from the switch, to get such low speeds. But with all DSL it's a matter of bandwidth, and how many people are using the service at any given time. I am very fortunate to live about 6 blocks from the main office, so my speeds are very good, even though I pay for the slowest speed. It's a whole lot better than dial up was! People who live out of town either have no service available or it's really sloooow. Have you tried it late at night?

A positive attitude won't solve all your problems, but it will annoy just enough people to be worth the effort.

@PC Bob
Yes, I have tried it in different times, however I don't think that this case has any thing to do with the amount of users or peak times. This case is about a SUDDEN BURST OF SPEED, NEVER SEEN BEFORE.
It would be delicious if I could have that speed again. :D

Note: Consider my ADSL as a to-be-all-time-online-dial-up. ;-) (since the terrible speed of it)

Have you tried calling the provider? It would be interesting to see what they said about it. Maybe they could fix it so it stayed fast?

Yeah, right.

With all that has been said:

It may also be the files you are downloading...and from where.

You can have the fastest connection in the World but the site you go to may be very slow.

Where were you during the fast downloads?

One of my first ISP didn't use a routing service.....it was terrible! Does yours?

If your ADSL modem is external I would go back to internal. Get the smaller one (card)for win 95, then get the patch to use it on XP. Bellsouth should still have it.

Critter Zooms!

I now have cable....don't care for it. My patched ADSL modem was faster.

Chances are it was simply a combination of a few things. The segment of the network you are on may have had very light traffic at that moment in time and the server you were downloading from may not have been very busy. Both combined would make for a noticably faster download.

I was trying to download a few big files the other day and kept getting redirected to a server that could only provide a 2 KBps rate. The few times I wasn't redirected, I was getting the same files at about 300 KBps. That was the server, not my 3 Mbps DSL connection that was the problem (reminded me of the days when my 1200 baud modem was the "fastest" thing around.......LOL).

My point being, download rates are VERY dependant on how heavy the traffic is on the internet and how busy the server you're downloading from is.

Hi Curt. You must be an old-timer, like me. I remember those 1200 baud days, too. I remember trying out a phone-coupled modem that ran at 50 baud! Needless to say, I didn't use it very long; just long enough to get a new modem. LOL.
