SubNet Mask....its purpose..?.

Please can u explain what is the purpose of Subnet mask after giving IP address in a computer using in Local Area Net work.

A subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 means that only the last octect of the ip is used, so if you have a ip of 192.168.0.1 the the last number IE 1 is used.

With the subnet of 255.255.255.0 means you can only have 255 computers on that network, without a router.

A subnet of 255.0.0.0 mean that all octects in the ip apply.

It's kind of complex but that's the best I can do:)
