Mark...this is not subject that can be explained in a paragraph or two...

I suggest you hit the library and find a book or two ip address, subnets..etc...

Any book that is for Cisco certification is good and if you do a search on the Inet for things like "subnet masking" "ip addresses" etc should put you in touch for a lot of info...

It's a good subject to persue...

Steve

Steve's right. It IS too much for this forum. However, you can have a read of the post "Trouble with subnets". It's down a ways, but I spent some time there explaining a bit about networking. It should be a start for you.

http://www.ittutor.com

has a range of on-line tutorials on all MCSE basics; includes Net Essentials and TCP/IP; obviously covers sub-nets.

http://www.tcpipprimer.com/index.cfm

is another 'detailed' source...

http://examware.com/tutor12.html

has extensive tutorials.

http://www.find.com.au/tutorials/networking/tcpip

is another...

Do search in google.com for (not the ) and you'll get even more.

Mark Minasi has good books on the whole subject. Will Wills has co-authored with 'others' a book for the Network+ exam; it has an excellent tcp/ip tutorial. It's part of the CompTIA text-book series for it's various exams.

http://www.bookpool.com/.x/ofbk7tksin/sm/1576104125

tells you more about the book.

To explain briefly,an IP address is used to identify a machine on a network(s)while subnet mask is used in conjunction with an IP address to tell whether this particular machine is on the network "locally" or "remotely". Better check out the sites and advices provided by the previous experts who posted earlier.
