Help!! I use a dial-up modem and now I get a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 every time I log on. My isp can't help, they tried, but every thing I've tried doesn't work, I've reloaded my winsock, checked for virus ,auto loaded dns, firewall off-on disabled- allowed, dirty install of xp, repair with xp, nothing has worked. I have a slave drive with 98se and have no trouble. I connect with my isp and then a subnet of 255 string when I use xp. I've pinged to China and back- no good. Anyone have ANY ideas
Thanks

If your ISP is supplying you with a dynamic IP, then the subnet mask should be assigned along with it, as well as DNS addresses.

Have you tried a different modem or at least re-installing the driver?

I'm sure you've tried this but if not:

Go to your network connections, then right click on your connection, select properties, in the scroll box go down and highlite internet protocal(tcp/ip), click properties, put a check in the first and third box, click advanced and then remove any listed ips and gateways.

That's a valid subnet mask and it's common for point-to-point dialup configurations like yours (in fact, I believe it's default in Windows 2000/XP - I think Windows 9x had 0.0.0.0). It's also not needed, because Windows does not use a subnet for dialup (DHCP is not involved here). Everything should be automatically configured when you dial in anyway. I am assuming this is a normal dialup situation (a single dialup connection in Windows).

What instructions does your ISP provide for you to setup your Internet Connection? A link would be fine. Also, do you have any other connections in use concurrently?
