Strange problem with my network :(

Hi,

I hope someone can help me out with my problem. I have an ADSL connection (so sweet) and there are 3 networked computers running off it. I can access the web fine and I can play some online games such as TFC and half life with no problem. The problem is that some games refuse to detect my modem connection as well as some other programs, such as NAV 2002 and Netscape 6. This is the same problem for all the computers on the network and it is driving me nuts trying to figure out what the problem is.

The setup of the network is this:

There is an ADSL router that acts as the main hub. The 3 computers are all plugged into this router and access the net this way. My computer is running XP pro!

I hope someone can give me a little help with this. I have spoken to a lot of people but nobody seems to be able to figure it out.

Many thanks,

James

Hey James,

I don't think it is that nobody can figure it out... I think it's that you need to provide a little more background information for someone to adequately assess the situation.

Do your three pc's on the network have internal IP's or real internet IP's attached to them? Have they been assigned by you or a DHCP server? Is the router yours or your DSL provider's? If it is your ISP's, or it came configured by them, perhaps they can help you troubleshoot as well. You may want to consider fine-tuning your question and reposting if all else fails. I'm afraid I'm out for the day.. but Ijust wanted to leave you some advice. I'll check in later on. Good Luck James

Jesse

Y'know, that may be the reason!

Okay...all the PCs have internal IPs that begin 192.xxx.xxx.xx The router was supplied by the ISP and has its own IP which is something like 213.xxx.xx.xxx
I have tried contacting the ISP about other network related problems but they are pretty useless and will refuse to help because they 'do not support Windows XP or networks". Grrr.
The IP addresses were supplied by a DHCP server (I presume) and all the computers use the protocols such as TCP/IP, Netbuie, NW link etc etc

I hope this provides enough info to help me out because thats pretty much all I know. If you need any more info then let me know and I will try to dig it up for you.

James

Hi,
If you can access the web fine, what problem do you have with Netscape 6? I don't think those programs are supposed to detect a modem if your computers are connected on a LAN. Did you run the Internet Connection Wizard? Be sure to choose the last (3rd) option for connection over a LAN. I believe the modem detection features of the programs are for internal 56k dialup modems, where the program wants to make sure you have established an internet connection before going for "live updates" (NAV2002). If you are connected over a LAN, then it is the routers responsibility to maintain the perpetual Internet connection with keepalives and so the programs always assumes the connection is there. Make sense??

Thanks, I'm pretty sure that I did the internet connection wizard but I'll give it another try. The problem with Netscape 6 is that it needs to d/l updates or connect with the Netscape server but it claims that I am not online. Not a huge problem seeing as I don't want to use Netscape but I was just using it as an example of my problems. :)

I have a similar network confiruration to yourself, but have to use internet connection sharing!!, anyway in the network tcpip settings, control-panel-network-tcpip protocol, setup a static ip address's for your home network something like 192.168.0.1 subnetmask 255.255.255.0 use a different number for each machine i.e. 192.168.0.2 for the second and 192.168.0.3 for the third, the subnet mask settings must be the same.
under gateway put the network ip address of your router (adsl modem)under dns put the ip of the router again and any name as host do not put a domain name in. Nothing under Wins.
Make sure all your computers have the same name under workgroup in the identification tab give them a unique computer name description doesn't matter under access control set to share-level. Under client for microsoft networks select logon and restore network connections, do not put in a domain server name unless you use a proper win2k or NT server.
This should give each machine a valid IP address and setup a valid route to the internet.

Remove all other protocols unless you need them for something else on you home network there not needed for internet access at all!

Then under internet properties in control panel then open the connections tab if you do not have any actual dial up modems installed remove all instances of modem connections. At the bottom of the page there is a lan settings button click auto detect settings only. this should now be enough to connect your computers to the internet.

Hope this little lot helps unless you have allready fixed your problems (just noticed the date).
