straight through cable vs crossover

does it matter if i use crossover cable or straight through when i network workstation to a router

Depends wether or not the router supports both types of cable!

Crossover cables are only used when connecting a PC directly to another PC. The crossover signifies the switching of the receive / transmit wires at the other end. Wha one computer sends is directly fed into the receiving port of the other (vice versa)

Use straight cables when using a hub, switch, or router - as the internal circuitry switches these over when it routes to another computer
