It's me again... thanks for the help you guys.. but still can't get it right!
I have win98se installed, two network cards installed (one on each computer), cable modem installed, and a hub... I connected the cable modem to the hub, the cable that goes from my network cards to the hub, and the cable that goes from the network card from my other pc to the hub. I can get my pc to work fine, but can't see the other pc in my network neighborhood, nor can i use the internet.
I must be doing something wrong! The way i configured the tcp/ip settings, is that i obtained automatically an ip address, disabled wins resolution, did not put a gateway. On the other pc, i really don't know how to set the tcp/ip.
Help me out! Let me know if what i did upto now is okay or not, and what else i need to do.

After hours of trying and doing just about anything.. i finally got it.. it works fine now.. so thanks to everybody anyways! :)
Here's my question now though...
now that i have the internet thing working... if i want to set up a network to be able to share files and printers, i know that i have to go change the tcp/ip settings, but by doing that, the internet won't work anymore... so what to do???

Angela:
A few useful 'how to' sites:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com
Tim Higgins' site - check under the 'sharing tab' - covers all flavours of sharing - DUN/cable/DSL.
http://www.dslreports.com - logically DSL, but much will apply to cable as well.
http://www.sohointer.net/top/sitemap.htm
has a plethora of useful links/info. that may also be of use...?
Do a search via: http://www.goggle.com and use the 'string':
cable-modem sharing
and you'll get loads more...
Another excellent LAN site - but not as strong on cable/DSL - yet... is Hemig's at:
http://www.wown.com aka http://www.helmig.com
