depends on what OS you have on how you determine this. Win98- start run (type) winipcfg. pick your NIC card and if you can release and renew then it is dynamic, if the IP doesnt change then its static. unless the IP you see is a 169.XXX.XXX.XXX. if it is you dont have an IP yet. this 169.XXX. is the windows default. if OS is W2K, XP then start run (type) cmd. at command prompt type ipconfig. then ipconfig/release. then ipconfig/renew. again if it releases and renews then its dynamic.

well if you have dsl, and you did not purchase the enhanced version (which comes with 5 ips, pacbell version, i dont know about other dsl providers) and you didnt sign up for dsl with a static ip, then you have a dynamic ip. there are programs out there that can check your what your IP is, espically if your have a dynmaic dsl line? you can also do a " arp -a " in a dos window? are you looking to host web sites or connect more then one computer to the internet?

there are 2 computers in the network.

I tried to set the hub up to share the internet. the network works fine.

I run winipcfg after all is set up, and both computers show that they are given 2 diffrent ip addresses from my Internet Provider. But they still don't access the internet.
also I do not plan on purchasing an extra ip address.
I do know someone that uses a hub to share internet(dsl, 2 computers) without purchasing an extra IP and without 3 nic's.
problem is I can't get in contact with this person

If u run winxp or win2000, at DOS Prompt
issues a command :
ipconfig /all , if u see
if use DHCP = NO, mean static ip
if DHCP = YES , then mean dynamic ip address
Dynamic ip mean and in tcp/ip stack for your network adaptor or connection
u will see below :
OBTAIN AN IP AUTOMATICALLY, OBTAINED DNS
SERVER AUTOMATICALLY/DISABLE DNS
FOR WIN98, same as above , but with addition setting AND SELECTED USE DHCP FOR WINS RESOLUTION OR USE DHCP IN WIN98 TCP/IP STACK SETING

I believe this may help.
