Ok here's my old setup that worked fine.

1: Linksys router, model BEFSR41
1: Linksys Wireless-B Access point, model WAP11

3 machines:
1: Windows XP
1: Red Hat 9
1: laptop with windows 98 (Netgear wireless pci card)

All above worked fine till I introduced the following to my network

1: Machine with widows 98
1: Microsoft Wireless-G PCI Adapter, Model MN730 (works with wireless G and B)

Now, the Microsoft wireless adapter works fine if OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY is selected, but since I am using this to run my webcam off, I want to select a STATIC IP. The wireless adapter will only connect to the other PCs on my network in STATIC IP mode but will not allow me to access the internet. It works fine if left in OBTAIN IP mode.

I'm assuming STATIC IP is supported with this wireless card because in the owners manual it tells you how to set a STATIC IP.

Anyone have any ideas??

thanks

j

The question is, what is this IP address and where did you get this static IP from.

As it works fine with OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY it means your ISP is providing an IP address via DHCP. This is a dynamic IP address.

If you want to use a Static IP address you must obtain the IP address from you IP and use the one they give you. When that happens OBTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY will not work.

It look like a dns issue. When not using dhcp, DNS server address won't be received from the router. Then you have to specify them manually as you did for the ip address.

OK I added the DNS, I'm assuming I added the right one, I took it from my routers settings. Still did not work. One thing I forgot is. I had this work on my laptop with the wireless adapter. I was able to set the IP to Static and choose the IP I wanted and when I booted up it had that IP and I was able to access my network as well as access the internet. Now I've managed to hose that up as well. It only works on my laptop now if I set it to OBTAIN IP AUTOMATICALLY.

Whatever you do, you can not chose an IP address. All public IP addresses are allocated. They are either allocated by your ISP or by the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. The IANA allocates blocks numbers to ISP who then allocate them to clients, either as dynamic addresses or static addresses.

Just imagine what would happen if everyone were allowed to chose there own IP address - it would be chaos. It's like choosing your own telephone number. Contact you ISP and get a static IP address from them. They will also give you a DNS number.

You can have either a static address or a dynamic address. You cannot have both. You have a dynamic address. Until your ISP gives you a static address, you cannot use a static address.

ok I fixed the issue. I had to put the IP of my Wireless access point for the gateway IP and the IP of my router for the DNS IP.
