Comment:

I currently have a standalone pc with USB ADSL modem connection.

What would be the most cost-effective way of connecting another pc to the internet using wireless technology (due to restrictive room layouts at home for cables).

*NOTE: I need to be able to do all of the following:

-Connect to the internet using the newly added pc without the need for my current pc to be turned on.

-Connect with the current pc

-Share the connection with both pc's

Any comments/suggestions would be great, thanks

To start with, u will need a router, this will remove the neccessity for any one machine to be switched on to access the internet - the router handles the sharing.

As ur using a USB modem (which can't normally be plugged into a router), ur best bet is to buy a wireless/modem/router all-in-one box to connect to one machine and a USB wireless adaptor for the other.

The Netgear DG824M would be a good choice as a budget buy.

Don't be tempted by the D-Link DSL604+ (which I use), this all-in-one box has a known propensity to freeze occassionaly (then u have to power down for a few secs to re-connect).

Hope this helps

Thanks for the input. I had a feeling the USB modem would become obselete!

Would you say that the 802.11b wireless connectivity is fast enough for LAN gaming ?

I have a very similar question which I posted just above yours. I've been looking at this modem and am thinking of getting one but I wanted to point out a warning. A lot of people have had problems of being disconnected through the wifi after a period of several hours. If you can read french there's a post which supposedly gives a fix to it http://www.dslvalley.com/forum/forum_read.php3?fqID=6257&ID=0304
which changes a setting. Otherwise the post I posted is trying to find out how easy/feasible it is to use powerline technology which allows your electrical outlets to pretty much act as a big ol' hub.

i've seen a similar system. i.e. two laptops, one connected to the router directly, the other one wireless. Used devices: BENQ AWL100 and BENQ AWL700 (wireless lan pc card and router for about 175 € / $). it works great. an for lan games, i think the wireless connection is faster than the adsl, so that shouldn't be a problem. Only problem: the more pc's on the internet via the router, the slower each one goes.
