Heres my problem. WE have 3 computers in the house, all owned by different people! WE now have Cableinternet, and have hooked up the 3 computers into internet using a router Zyxel Prestige 314.(we only have 1 IP number (connection)!!!! ONE of us is worried that now it is possible for one of the other people to spy on what the others are doing in internet and on the computer! Is this possible with a router? Does it help if I say we are using LAN to hook up to the router, or is this standard? If so, what do we have to look out for? Is it possible to stop other people connected onto this router/LAN to spy on the other computers! Thanks for anyones help! Once bitten, twice shy....I have been spyed on before.......
Thanks
Jenny

depending on the router, if it can do web page monitoring, then yes someone can look at the logs and see what web pages EVERYONE has gone to [not just you]. Access to your computer? Only by hacker tools. Keep firewall and antivirus software uptodate. If 9x then anyone with physical access can see where you have been.

yes u can
there is a program called a network sniffer
wat they basically do is capture all information transfered over the network
but they are hard to get and its not that likely that u will be sniffed

Network sniffer, not hard to get at all. You can down load those bad boys off the net. But knowing how to use it, and what your doing, that's a different story. But I digress.
For you situation, everyone should get themselves a firewall. Zone Alarm is pretty good. Set it up not only for protection on the internet, but also for your LAN (the intranet). Firewalls like Zone Alarm can also let you designate what computers can accesses in and out of your computer. Any computer not on the list will be blocked for access, and on top of that, report to you what IP address did it, so that way you'll know if one of the other guys tried to get in your goodies. Most common home routers don't do web caching. If you bought a router with it, you would know it. So don't sweat someone checking into the router for your web action.
Now a sniffer, is a different story, but I wouldn't get paranoid about it. If you have the knowledge of sniffers, you would have the knowledge of security, so long story short, firewalls should be enough for your needs.
