Hey guys, having a little trouble here. I just recently moved from another state and signed up with a different ISP. Before I moved I had my systems set up with 2 systems running off of one cable modem. I had the cable running to a small 5 port Linksys hub, and then both systems running to the hub as well. All I had to do was call the ISP and ask them to assign me another IP. I know they were using DHCP so I'm assuming it was a dynamic ip. Since I've moved I'm trying to do the same thing. I can't get it to work to save my life. I thought it was because my new ISP didn't specify my order as needing two ip's assigned, but I called them and they said they have a different setup and that it wasn't required. They said as long as I had my own home network it should work. It's not really a network I have seeing as I have to use the tcp/ip properties on each nic card for DHCP (the two systems can't see each other in network neighborhood) I would have to install two more nic cards to set that all up (tried that, evidently Win98 doesn't support two nic cards in the same box for some reason?) Anyway, I've played with the settings like a madman on my second system and I still can't get a signal to it. I even tried to connect the cable modem directly to it by itself to bypass the hub. No joy, didn't work, still had no signal. Any ideas anyone?

if you do not get the second IP address from your ISP, then you need to create your own home network. one way to do it is to use a router, and then plug each of the pcs into it and share the internet. another way is to use internet connection sharing on the first computer connected to your cable modem, and then connect the other computer to it with a crossover cable through a second NIC on the first computer, and set up ICS on the first computer to handle internet traffic for the second computer. this option does require w98se or later version of windows. info on setting up networking and internet connection sharing can be found at www.homenethelp.com. good luck, been lots of requests for this kind of info on here, scan some of the older threads, Al

I am amazed the ISP didn't sell you another IP address, I used to pay an extra $5/month for a second address. That is by far the easiest, but not the cheapest.
A Linksys router/switch/firewall is what you need. I use a BEFSX41. One WAN address, 4 LAN addresses, and firewall protection.
