Reply: (edit)In registry Hkey_local_Machine\system\Controlset001\services\{hex-key}\Parameters\TcpIP\DhcpServer if you don't have Dhcpserver key then enter it and give it a value you wish. Hope this would work out for ya.

Reply: (edit)singhhr, Isn't that key (hex-key=Nic name) set AFTER the client Request and the DHCP server Acknowledges the client request for a particular address? A sniff of DHCP traffic always shows a broadcast to 255.255.255.255 for a DHCP address. Its part of the DHCP RFC. Danny, See the response in you Win9x post 128229. Having only one DHCP server in a subnet is the only way to ensure which DHCP server you'll get an address from.

Reply: (edit)Danny, Just read what appears to be your first (10289) of three posts on this. You'll get better responses if you stick to one post. Then people like me could get all the information at once, rather than having to piece your posts together.

Reply: (edit)Micheal: You said: "A sniff of DHCP traffic always shows a broadcast to 255.255.255.255..." This is exactly the problem here, it simply doesnt. Look like a bug in win95 tcp stack. Never seen that in other windows version. Then i think singhhr is pointing to the right solution to this problem. I will test it as soon as i can. Sorry for multiple posts, i rarely do that!!

Reply: (edit)There are lots of bugs with the IP stack in Win95 - DHCP has a few of them. Make sure that you have updated your winsock to winsock2 from Microsoft's website and that may help you. Registry editing is never a good thing to do unless you just have to, especially with the older windows O/S. Here is a link to winsock2 - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/contents/updates/ You might want to look at upgrading to at least WIN98SE. Good Luck

Reply: (edit)Have you tried switching from a dynamic IP to a static IP address and then back? I'm not sure if the key singhhr spoke of would get reset or not. I, too, have found the Win9x IP stack to be less than desirable. Specially in the way it handles SMB traffic.

Reply: (edit)Michael: Yes, it is the first thing i tried, and also tried to uninstall/reinstall the protocol. Ribbit: I know i should upgrade this old laptop to win98se, but it is just occasionally used by my staff at hotel/home/offices. As long as i release-ip before i shutdown, there is no problem, dhcp return to its default address.
