My current router is a Netgear DG834G v4. My network adaptor is a D-Link DWL-G510, which apparently is no longer supported by D-Link. I have the Vista x64 drivers installed for it.

Now, my wireless connection keeps dropping, and even when it's connected, it's slower than dial-up. Seriously.

I bought myself some HomePlug AV adaptors to get round this problem. Linksys PLK200's to be exact. They were amazingly brilliant, but after a couple of hours, one of the two adaptors went dead - no lights, no activity, no heat coming from it. So I had to send them back. I have now been refunded for the Homeplug adaptors.

Now I would like to know what options I have available to me, and which would be the best option to go for. The Homeplugs were truly amazing while they were working, and I wouldn't back down to buying them again, but someone told me that Homeplug is a waste of money and that I should buy a more powerful antenna. They didn't say whether it should be for my wireless network card or the router or if I should get one for both, but I still very much like HomePlug.

So can anyone please make any suggestions or enlighten me on my options please? And which one would be the best option?

Always wise to use same manufacturer equipment. In other words you have a netgear router so you should use the netgear recommended wireless card the supports that router and vista.

Here are three that www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk
list with that router.

I'm not so sure that's the problem. My brother's PC has a US Robotics 5416 PCI Wireless Turbo Adaptor in it, and his laptop also supports wifi, but I don't know what card/chip it uses. I also have a Nintendo DS. The wifi technology in the Nintendo DS was developed by Buffalo. All work fine on that router, no matter where they are. It's just mine.

It could be a weak signal or signal noise affecting your wireless signal.

I've used AC LAN adapters in the past on rare occasion and I do like them. They've worked great when wireless signals are a problem and it's just one computer that need to be connected. Netgear has some AC LAN adapters last I saw, you can give them a try.

I got myself some ZyXEL homeplug adaptors a couple of days ago, and the difference is just WOW!

I know I'm only on 8Mb ADSL broadband, so the extra 192Mbps pretty much goes to waste except for when I send something to my mum's PC downstairs, but it's still amazing compared to the wireless. I've kept my wireless card installed though, so that if the connection ever drops I am still connected, albeit at a speed which seems worse than dialup. At least the speed is pretty constant.

People keep sending me theories (on other forums) about how its possible that wireless is so bad, seeing as its max speed is 54Mbps. That's fine if it works, which mine simply doesn't. Or it does, but for one reason or another is very very slow, even though signal strength is "Excellent" or "Very good".

Anyway, enough banter. Hopefully these adaptors will last me a very very long time.

Thanks. :)
