Had help from previous posts, now much closer, but still cannot print from a wireless XP laptop through a Vista desktop with wired router and printer. It does work the other way, ie desktop can see laptop and print through it when printer connected to laptop.
The laptop now can ping the desktop IP, it has an 'auto' printer port which has the correct path to the printer, ie \\office\smprint which is desktop name and printer share name, but still won't print. It can even see the desktop when I try to add a network place, but will not connect to it.
User id's and passwords are now the same, I've shared as much as possible, but not sure if I need to take firewalls down?
I must now be so close, can anyone suggest what's missing please?

Analyst - thank you thank you!! 2 weeks of fiddling about and now seeing all those steps together in one place have helped me solve it - I hadn't given proper permissions on the desktop, and crucially hadn't put the laptop's IP in to my McAfee firewall as being trusted - It now works perfectly - thanks again
