My issue is I have a Sonicwall firewall that has 3 interfaces on it LAN,WAN,DMZ.
Connected to the WAN is a Cisco Router I haven't assigned any static routes in the router yet, but I don't feel as I should have to.Currently I have a DMZ with a DNS server and an email server (Mdaemon).
I'm having trouble with connecting to my email server (DMZ) within my LAN for SMTP purposes only. What I did for a test to make sure everything is being routed correctly is blocked any Internet traffic from accessing my DMZ network. I figured if my routes where setup correctly that I should be able to access the two different subnets (LAN, DMZ) without internet access. Everything seems to work fine pop, web email server, and I get SMTP to work but its very slow and sending takes forever to connect and send.
I feel as I'm missing something crucial in my setup, such as a DNS issue. I posted my sonicwall routing table at the end in hopes of some guidance in why SMTP is the culprit. When the DMZ is able to have internet access the SMTP connecting part is a little bit faster, but the upload speed seems to stay the same either way and its always around the speed of my internet connection.
I've run a packet sniffer, and it seems as all traffic is being routed efficiently and not accessing the internet, but the slowness boggles my mind. Say if I send a 70MB attachment to an internal email box, sending through outlook takes forever, since it runs at about internet speed. If I connect to the email web server and create an email and upload the file it only takes seconds. Then with POP I can receive the 70MB attachment in seconds whether I have internet access for the DMZ or not. It's probably not the best way to judge routing issues with speed, but I can't think of any reason why this is going on.
